Halloween is approaching

Orange in the air…

During an early October trip to FabMo’s wonderful collection of fabrics somehow the autum colors caught my eye. I could not help but rush home to whip up a simple pumpkin pattern. I found a few but modified it into a simple cloth ball cushion and added a spiral pipe cleaner stem and cut leaf that can be easily be removed later for future use an orange round pillow.

What I did not know was that FabMo was offering a class at the same time over at Goole on making tiny eight inch pumpkins with fancy hard rolled stems.

Whale shark pencil case

The Atlanta aquarium in Atlanta Georgia has an amazing exhibit including a very very huge tank where for a fee one can swim with whale sharks.  A friend of mine got to do this and I got to watch and enjoy the seeing the patterns on the back of these beautiful creatures.

It is amazing how something that is so large filter feeds on tiny plankton something that is so very small.

Inspired by this beautiful animal I have made a new pencil case out of a designer wool sample a zipper and some grommets. Then I made several more out of blue ultrasuade and stenciled dots onto the back. It inspired me to get a proper grommet setting tool and take my grommet setting up to the pro level.

Costa Rica birding

April 2017 I found myself visiting Selva Verde bird sanctuary. Rather than seeing in birds in captivity I had the pleasure of interacting with well informed guides who listened for and whistled out to the many  birds. They knew all of the poisonous things to look out for in the jungle.

Glass frogs were amazing to see right through when illuminated.

It is an incredible preserve with well-maintained paths and tin a roofs so one may walk about in the rain forest without getting wet. Each morning I awoke before dawn to the near by troupe of howler monkeys calling out to the squirrel monkeys “get the heck out of our territory”.

Best to just get going and not try to get back to sleep as the early morning was the best time of day to see many of the birds.
In case you missed the morning show the lodge puts out a spread of fruit right by the dining hall so local critters come for a nibble. I saw iguanas and squirrels and many many birds stop by to the delight of  visitors who had their cameras out as they came by for unlimited tea and cookies.

Grommets are Great

This week I did a display for FabMo in Mountain View. I have an going educational series on what to do with repourpsed fabric. I was happy to sing the praises of the overlooked little metal fitting that I have come to expect in some design center samples as well as lots of sporting gear and tent fittings. I especially love how utility can be improved with a well set grommet. Unfortunately a home level setting kit often has poor results that pull out easily after not being well installed.

Michael Kors uses this as a hem finish on a knit dress

I like therefore to appreciate the grommets I find and sometimes make use of in projects where up cycled fabrics feature grommets. A strong example of this is a vest I made from a linen fabric swatch book that featured two fittings on each fabric layer. Rather than be disappointed I was thrilled and even tacked shop worn places back together so the grommit could keep in line. The lower skirt is made from bike inner tubes and quilt fabric. The front zips closed and the metal does not touch the skin.

Below at left the grommets do touch the skin. Hopefully they are smooth inside. I had to get rid of a neat independent designer's bra top studded with grommets, cool to look at but a pinch to wear. It laced up the back and had a snap adjusting band. It was a clever design but she needed to invest in that better grommet setter that I have my eye on.

Wee Welcome
Sewing Together

Over the years many many friends and family have had babies and to welcome each I would make a quilt based in tradition but full of modern variations. Some of my favorite projects were made from collecting cloth, pitch in donations to make a group quilt, a tangible welcome from all of us.

Currently I am developing these pieces into simple instructions so others can join in the fun of sewing up a unique gift for a new arrival. I started this collection but got stuck in the organization aspect. The problem was not the design or quilt instructions, rather socially, how a group forms and communicates. Thinking and writing about this got me way off in to the weeds  of hypothetical people and how they connect.

In January I dusted off my notes and at last understood why it stalled. I am a designer not a group organizer. Chances are you potential makers do know how to reach your people better than I can imagine.

Thankfully I release that piece and embrace treasured fabrics and quilts they turn into.  I plan to refine and edit the design instruction in the coming months and see if they inspire other people to want to sew together.

Dress Transformations

Variations on the Suzi Dress

Lace Inserts
Add a visual interest with a lace inserts. Could be a large piece on the back or up the sides or small details.
Keep the structural assist of the t-shirt layer when possible for better wearing, cut sparingly if you remove backing cloth as a curl to the shape can be expected if there is no support under the cut out. A second option is to insert a contrasting color cloth under the lace, or even dye the lace before adding for visual interest.

Bias Tape
Use old silk neck ties to make bias tape. A bright bit of 1.5 – 2” silk wide strip, edges folded in to create a neat narrow band of bias tape to create a dramatic finish of patterns and color on an unfinished edge.

Ruffles
Add a tight ruffle to the neckline with t-shirt strip cut from the sleeves joined into a long 1” trim ribbon. Gather using a needle or with a long basting stitch on
the machine.
A variation might be to use a lighter drape fabric to make a deep 5-7” gathered hem ruffle for a Spanish flamenco dancer inspired polka dot or other spice at the hip line. Ruffles need to be at least twice as long as the area they are to cover measure the opening before starting to attach to ensure proper length.

Sleeve variations
re purpose a blouse with great long or short sleeves into service a Suzi Hiking Dress.
Make floaty angle bell sleeves from large billows of chiffon with cuffs all ready constructed.
Make a stunning diamond shape lace neck jabot or even poncho wings attacking to the back the neckline with simple stitches that can be removed when washing. Traditionally ladies had only one or maybe two dresses and they would sew cuffs and collars int
o place changing out these details to create new looks for the same dress. Why not use a second shirt in the same color to make a shrug that can be worn with the sleeveless Suzi and look like part of the ensemble as well act as a simple cover up on other occasions.

Maxi dress can be ready in a flash with a finished layer below or a large scarf or sarong tucked around the waist and tucked into boy shorts underneath, see the traditional Sari of India for beautiful examples of elegance in dressing without cutting cloth.

Too much plunge in the neckline?

Find vintage treasures to put into service, a handkerchief or small scarf can be stitched or pinned into place to rebalanced a neckline and provide confidence in professional situations.

Create a shaped hemline
Why always go straight, angle the hem into a hip distraction with a high left and low right, or if you have great legs try short in front long in back. This could work especially well with a ruffle or two worked into the hem.

Deconstruct the shirt, with a youthful slash or woven ladder back or fringed a bottom edge for a casual look. For a variation use a graphic t-shirt as contrasting piece under the slits, the branded graphic peeks out from under the slices. Or try using two logo shirts, Physic and Cleaners making a new meaning from the blended images.
